Mental Health

headspace

12-25 Years

Young people tend to report a higher rate of suicidal thoughts and other health-risk behaviours, such as smoking, drinking and drug use, and many delay seeking help because they fear stigma and discrimination.

Our mental health support services are for young people (12 – 25yrs) with mild to moderate mental health issues.  They may be going through a tough time and needing youth friendly support.  Whether they are seeing one of our doctors (GPs), health workers or mental health professionals – all headspace staff are experts at working with young people.

Our services cover four core areas:

Mental health and wellbeing
Physical and sexual health
Work and study support, and
alcohol and other drug services

Visits are free and confidential, and headspace welcomes and supports young people of any ethnicity, culture, faith, sexual orientation and gender identity.

Some of the reasons people visit us include:
Feeling anxious or stressed
Problems with family and friends
Issues in romantic relationships
Questions about sex
Questions about gender and who you are attracted to
Bullying
Anger
Help with finding a job or getting into study
Physical health (including sexual health) concerns
Feeling down or depressed
Just not feeling themselves

IPS Work & Study Program

currently available at headspace Port Lincoln, headspace Caboolture & headspace Bribie Island.

In partnership with the Department of Social Services the Individual Placement and Support (IPS) is a person-centred employment support program designed to walk alongside individuals living with mental health challenges. Rather than focusing on limitations, IPS recognises each person’s strengths, goals, and hopes for meaningful work. It offers tailored support to help people find and keep employment that brings purpose and connection, while honouring their healing journey.

Who does it support?

A young person can access the IPS program when they are a client of headspace and referred by the headspace clinical staff to the IPS program. To be eligible to participate in the IPS program:

  • be a young person aged up to 25, experiencing mental health concerns
  • be an eligible client of headspace in the participating headspace centre (headspace Bribie Island, headspace Caboolture, or headspace Port Lincoln)
  • have employment, education or training goals and be facing barriers to achieving these goals
  • be willing to participate in the service and able to make an informed decision to participate.
How does it support?

IPS works by meeting you where you’re at — emotionally, mentally, and practically:

  • It connects employment support with your mental health team, so you don’t have to repeat your story
  • You are actively involved in choosing the kind of work that feels right for you
  • It helps you search for real jobs in the community, based on your interests
  • You receive ongoing support, even after you begin working — for as long as you need
  • It honours your lived experience and works in partnership with you, not on your behalf
  • It helps you understand how employment might affect your income or other supports, with clear, kind guidance
