“No pressure, no diamonds,
no struggle, no strength…”
“A few years ago, I had been dealing with extreme, debilitating anxiety for about 2 years. To help and encourage me to get out of the house, my mum suggested we go to the beach for a walk. Feeling a little better, I eventually started to visit the beach every day, sometimes twice a day, simply to take a walk with my mother, and to get back out into the world and get back to myself.
It took a long time for me to feel comfortable at the beach, but the fresh air and wide open spaces helped – it truly was the best place to be. After 6 months of doing this daily, my mother started to search and pickup shells on our walks. I used to tease her. Looking for seashells is what kids do – not adults!
Slowly, I started to join my mum and enjoyed searching for and finding these awesome and special shells. Somehow doing that, took my mind off things and allowed me to push myself more and to get back into the world. This daily routine eventually made me strong and confident enough to go for my driver’s license so I could go out by myself and spend more time searching for shells, whenever I wanted to.
And I finally did it, after many, many tries – I successfully passed my license and my independent life started. That was nearly 11 months ago now, and I’m the happiest and most confident I’ve ever been! I now run a Tiktok/Instagram/Youtube channel which journals my seashell journey, my finds and experiences out near the ocean.
My handle is @shellcade, and I am now able to afford to live my dream daily and love what I do. I hope and believe I change people’s lives with my content and sharing my story.
I recently held a fundraiser selling the shells that I’ve found over the last couple of months, to raise $400, in only 2 days!! I’m holding another fundraiser right now and have committed to donating 20% of whatever I make from selling my shells, to go directly to Youturn Youth Support / headspace, because without the pressure and pain of the anxiety I’ve gone through in my life, I wouldn’t have found what I love doing.” Jonathon Montgomery (2021)
We are all like seashells upon the beach,
beautiful and unique… each with a story of it’s own to tell.
