In 2020 we set our sights on an initiative to provide more access to stable and affordable housing for our community – by raising funds to invest and build two Tiny Homes.
The Tiny Homes would provide short-term, transitional housing to those in need of homelessness support. After receiving help to resolve crisis in their lives, a tenant could receive ongoing social support and a safe space in a Tiny Home, before taking the next step to independent living.
Launching our Big Hearts for Tiny Homes campaign, we worked tirelessly with our community and corporate partners to raise awareness and funds for this exciting project. Over many months, driven by compassion and support, we raised enough to build two Tiny Homes!
Working closely with Noosa Council, we were able to secure suitable land for the two homes, with nearby support options for tenants. Supported by Aussie Tiny Houses, we were able to build two purpose-built homes, suitable for individuals, couples and families in need of safe and supportive accommodation.
In 2023, we welcomed our very first tenant.
Since then, the Tiny Homes have made a huge difference in the lives of many, helping to support 6 families get back on their feet.
For these families, the Tiny Homes were a safe place in an otherwise chaotic life, where unexpected circumstances had left them sleeping in unconventional unsafe places with their children. While for others, it has been a space of acceptance and support, where they no longer feel ridiculed or judged.
To be close to support has been vital for our tenants, and has resulted in incredible outcomes. After receiving support, tenants of the Tiny Homes have been able to move into long term housing, temporary supported accommodation, or social housing as a result.
One young mother, Emma* was able to find safety and support for her and her two children for six months. While residing in one of our Tiny Homes, Emma was supported by Youturn to identify and address the barriers she was facing, which were preventing her from finding suitable accommodation. Helping her to complete housing applications, Youturn also advocated alongside Emma in her search for long term housing.
With consistent support and encouragement, Emma was successful in securing a stable home for her and her two children. In a tough housing climate, this was an amazing and lifechanging outcome.
Youturn continued to walk beside Emma through the transition, helping her plan the move, access furniture, and reduce the stress of starting over, ensuring she and her children had the best possible start in their new home.
It is stories like Emma’s that show us the impact two Tiny Homes can have on our community. Youturn are extremely grateful for the community support, and countless donations and fundraising efforts that made this possible. Together, we are making a difference.
