The Building of our Tiny Homes – Follow our Journey

Over the past year, since launching our “Big Hearts for Tiny Homes” initiative to tackle youth homelessness on the Sunshine Coast by building Tiny Homes for those young people transitioning from crisis accommodation towards independent living, we have some exciting news to share!

With the awesome support of our generous partners, we have managed to raise enough to build our first TWO tiny homes!  The deposits have been paid and Aussie Tiny Houses have commenced with the builds, with an expected delivery of September 2021!

Youturn explored various options for the best position for our two tiny homes and worked closely with Noosa Council to identify the best location.  The land next door to Tait Duke Cottage community support centre in Earl Street, Tewantin was proposed as the best option.   Reasons for this included proximity to Youturn and Noosa’s Social Service Hub allowing ongoing support as needed, shared utilities and resources with Youturn, quiet cul de sac position within a community precinct and good access to community living (jobs, education, transport).

In recent weeks, Youturn has consulted and engaged with our neighbours, parties and body corporates in and around the community precinct about the possibility of positioning the tiny homes at Earl Street.  To date, feedback around the proposed site and the tiny homes project has been really positive and supportive.

“As a home grown, local Sunshine Coast charity, whose long-term vision is to strengthen our community by tackling youth homelessness, we look forward to welcoming our first tenants to our tiny homes.  September and the arrival of our tiny homes will be here before we know it and we still have a few things to do in preparation…  I really want to take the opportunity  to acknowledge and extend our gratitude to our community, our charity partners and our corporate donors, who have helped us achieve this initiative. ” said Darce Foley, Youturn’s GM of Community Services.

We will continue to share more of our Tiny Homes journey as it unfolds, so watch this space!
