Creative Minds: Exploring the Power of Art Therapy in Adelaide

Youturn’s Youth Enhanced Service (YES) in Adelaide has been busy bringing the power of art therapy to young people, helping build confidence, explore emotions, and develop healthy coping strategies.

In consultation with Live Well Counselling and Consulting, the team brought together a mix of craft textiles and sensory experiences – taking sessions outdoors and using natural elements at the beach or local parks to express emotions.

In a program called Creative Minds, young people came together to take part in a range of art-based activities, such as mask making where participants created a piece that explored their inward self and their outward self.

As the program continued, each week participants began to gain confidence, and the connections built amongst the group became stronger. Sessions focused on building resilience, self care, coping strategies, and building social support networks.

The Creative Minds group provided significant benefits for participants, with many expressing feelings of acceptance, forming meaningful relationships, and finding purpose and joy in the group setting.

Our YES Adelaide program supports young people aged 12–25 throughout the Adelaide metropolitan region who are navigating moderate to high mental health challenges.  The YES Adelaide team is made up of passionate Mental Health Clinicians, Clinical Care Coordinators, Peer Support Workers, and admin superstars — all working together to provide both psychological and functional support.
