On the 9th of June this year, our Youturn leaders Andrew Anderson, Darce Foley and Tanya Bell, together with the Toowoomba team hosted an afternoon tea for partners and supporters to celebrate the official opening of our refreshed Hume Street centre.
During Homelessness week 2020, Youturn announced a significant capital investment of $400,000 to establish new transitional housing for young people in Toowoomba and addressing guests at the gathering CEO Andrew Anderson provided an update.
“Youturn is working closely with council to finalise plans which are due to be submitted before the end of the month,” Andrew Anderson said.
“Given the significant pre-consultations we hope the process moves quickly and will allow us to commence construction before Christmas,” he added.
In further good news, Andrew talked about our expanded community support and introduced our newly appointed Community and Engagement Officer, Katie Sedl.
As part of her role, Katie will be providing expanded Emergency Relief (ER) and community support from Hume Street, and Andrew thanked Protea Place staff Mandy and Susie for helping with our ER delivery up until this point.
Other upgrades and expanded services at the Hume Street centre include a new phone number for people to book ER appointments, a community pantry, a place to heat meals and make a cuppa, and in the coming months new community laundry facilities.
We have been delivering services to young people in the Toowoomba region for a long time now and a big part of that has been through our fantastic headspace Toowoomba service which has been operating for six years.
Centre Manager of headspace Toowoomba Scott Johnston and some of his team attended the Hume event and mingled with guests whom they work with, supporting young people in the region.
Jo Lloyd is now located on-site at Hume. As well as maintaining oversight of Gateway House where she has been for over 15 years, Jo will continue to represent Youturn at the regional Housing Hub.
Other members of our Youturn team were introduced, including Adam Wenitong, who is very well known with his youth support worker role in the community, along with Skye and Isabella who deliver our Child Safety services in Toowoomba.
Youturn have a great team of committed professionals who, along with everyone at the event, feel passionate about Toowoomba and supporting vulnerable young people in need.
Exciting times ahead for Youturn Toowoomba, partners and supporters… feel free to drop‑in to visit the team on Hume.
