Homelessness

Crisis Accommodation Program

To help young people with transitional housing and independent living skills, we lease 15 properties through a head leasing arrangement with local community real estate agents and manage an additional three properties provided by the Department of Housing.

Golden Beach Crisis Accommodation

Our Golden Beach Crisis Accommodation Property provides 24 hours, fully supervised support to young people (16 to 25 years) who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. It is run on a “one to four model” – where we employ one youth worker to four young people.

This Program is based on the Sunshine Coast.

Gateway House Crisis Accommodation

Our Gateway House provides 24 hour, fully supervised support to young people (16 to 25 years), who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

It is one of only two crisis accommodation services for this age group (outside of Child Safety Services) in the Toowoomba region.

These properties are almost always at full capacity. Can you help?

Nara’s Story

I was born in Darwin and four years ago I came to the Sunshine Coast with my mother and siblings.  I don’t remember much about my youth, or maybe it’s just too painful to go there.  I needed to leave home last year and couch surfed for some time, before a school friend’s family took me in for 3 months.

I was in year 11 at the time, and the school eventually referred me to Golden Beach Crisis Accommodation.

The Golden Beach program and Fran who has helped me, has given me enough time to sort my life out.  They have not rushed me, but rather guided and supported me.  “This place is Bloody Amazing!”.  I was really sad to have left my family – but if you don’t have a choice, then this is the kind of place you want to come!”

I have been here for over 8 months now and things have gotten better for me.  I smile more, I have made some friends, and I now have some structure and routine to my life which I like.   I took control of my life and decided that school was not for me , so I have changed course by finding a waitressing job nearby which has given me some confidence and independence.

The future can be daunting, but I would like to save up enough to move into my own studio apartment. I’ve heard that you can make a good living working in the mines, so I am exploring a chef apprenticeship – so we will see what the future holds.
